eBay as Therapy?

It seems that a heartbroken man is selling his former life on eBay:

It seemed unbelievable when bids to buy a heartbroken man's life in Australia reached $2.1 million — and it was, with the bemused seller aware his life was only worth a quarter of that amount.

Ian Usher, 44, announced in March he was auctioning his life on eBay with the package including his three-bedroom house in Perth, Western Australia, a trial for his job at a rug store, his car, motorbike, clothes and even friends.

His decision to sell his life followed the break-up of his five-year marriage and 12-year relationship with Laura with whom he had built the house.

The blurb under his picture reads:

Ian Usher, a 44-year-old from Yorkshire in England living in Australia, launched the unusual auction after announcing on his blog: "I have had enough of my life! I don't want it any more! You can have it if you like!"

At first I thought this story was very sad and wondered if auctioning off one's life was much of a solution but in a way, I suppose it is much better than wallowing in self-pity and sinking into a depression. Some money and a fresh start might be a way to leave his former pain behind and it might provide a sense of control over the situation but auctioning off your friends? I wonder what they think of that?

Dear Dr. Helen,
Seems that the bidding has gone awry. Drudge is linking to a story titled "Man auctioning Aussie life says 'idiots' made false bids".

http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=080624084250.5hrz68cs&show_article=1

A few choice snips from the story...

"But after initially laughing at his luck, Usher quickly came down to earth when he realised that a registration system for bidding on the eBay auction site had not been activated."

""They are just idiots, absolute idiots," he told AFP."

"I think I was speaking to kids most of the time."

Usher has now deleted most of the bids on the site, even though some may have been genuine, and the top offer for his "life" sits at 300,100 dollars -- just over 145,000 pounds."

So, it comes to this. The guy thought things were going great and he now finds it has gone terribly wrong.

Wonder if he set a reserve price? Probably not. He didn't have registration set up properly. So, how is this going to end?

Hope it doesn't end ugly and that this man is able to reconcile the pain in his life.

David

Hmmm.....
What sort of bike are we talking here? Has he got a Harley or something pathetic?
What about the ex? Good looking? Comes 'round for nooky still?
Rug Salesman.... What kind of rugs? You can sell a lot of sheepskins by mentioning how nice it is to make love on one in front of the fire, but cheap rugs? Forget it.
I think we need to investigate this further, enquiring minds want to know these things :-)

This is so perverse. He's defining "his life" as "his circumstances". Any true auction of his life should also include his person. If you win, you would be able to do whatever you wanted with thim, including using him for target practice. He hasn't thought this through.

Good point. Circumstances change, and they are generally ameneable to change through hard work.

Solution? Or scam?

So is there some reason he can't just re-register correctly and start over? Seems an easy bit of recourse.

Well, to be honest, I've felt that way before. Except I couldn't give my life away. There are people who I've known 50 years who can't believe the crud my family and I've been through in the last decade +. Hell, I'm one of them!

And true, circumstances can change. They can get worse! With faith, patience, hard work and perseverance, they do get better again. Then you die.

Humor!
