How to turn the US into a Wonderland

Pam Meister has an interesting column at Pajama's Media entitled, "Teens who Hate America":

My oldest daughter, a sophomore in high school, recently complained to her father and I about some of her schoolmates’ declarations that they “hate America.”

When I asked if she could elaborate why they would say such a thing, she said she really couldn’t remember because she was so disgusted that she did everything she could to block out the conversation. She also confirmed that she didn’t say anything to them at the time.....

My daughter may not want to know why these kids might hate their own country, but I can make a pretty good guess. Think about it: what would you believe if you were raised on a steady diet about the failings of the dullard in the White House (who was nevertheless crafty enough to “steal” the 2000 election); about our “reduced standing” in the world since he took office; how capitalism is causing the earth to go up in a jolly blaze of global warming; how we are a nation of evil “haves” and powerless “have nots”; how our foreign policy is to blame for 9/11 and the Middle East considering America to be the “Great Satan”; and how the majority of Americans are a bunch of bigots and racists? Add to that the constant barrage of anti-war and anti-America rhetoric from groups like Code Pink and World Can’t Wait, and the complicity in these sentiments by the mainstream media and the entertainment industry — what would you think? After all, if the likes of Bill Maher, Michael Moore, Keith Olbermann, Susan Sarandon, and the brain trust on The View say it’s so, why would a teenager argue?

Funny, if a Democrat gets in the White House next year, my guess is that the US will suddenly become a wonderland where pretty ponies and butterflies live. Luckily, I don't think that all teens are dumb enough to fall for this propaganda.

I've found quite a few things about the left amusing (actually, it is less amusing when I think they might actually win).

The same people who compare Bush to Hitler seem to think the President should have to power to solve all our problems.

The people who say Bush lied us into war fail to explain why most leaders in the free world lied with him, not to mention why democrats started telling the "Bush lies" in the late 90s.

They don't explain why it was okay to depose of the tyrant Slobadan Milosevic (after all, in Clinton's intro at his presidential library, where he brags about how much he'sdone for the country, he takes full credit), but wrong to depose of Saddam Hussein, who killed at least 10 times as many people.

They don't explain how they are able to exercise their free speach daily to trash Bush for eliminating free speech.

They never explain why we should trust the government with health care after the mess the government has made of social security, medicaid, and welfare.

They don't quite explain why socialism will work here, when it has never worked before.

They never explain coherently why we should abandon capitalism, a doctrine that has helped more people escape poverty and live freer lives than any other for socialism (see above).

It speaks volumes that the most ill informed and naive of voters votes for the left.

I'm done. Happy Monday : )

politicians, are the same now. Regardless of affiliation. They are all turned into clones of each other.

Mostly, these people are parodies of themselves. Teens feeling they hate america, teens have always hated everything. its when they turn into adults they realise the world is a different country. Teens dont contribute, get taught politics, and not how to THINK.

Teens, hating its nothing new.

It'll be November of 1992 all over again. You remember - the year where Clinton and Gore traveled the country lamenting "the worst economy in 50 years" only to find out a few days after the election (imagine that!) that the economy was actually doing quite well. The Press was completely in the tank for the Democrats then and they still are today.

Most teens are an interesting combination of ignorance and arrogance. Fortunately, we still produce several hundred thousand good teens each year - the ones we're seeing joining the military come to mind. The "best and brightest" of this generation aren't going to places like Harvard or Yale - they're going to the Marines and other military branches.

I disagree with you somewhat, mercurior. So many teens hating everything to this degree is relatively new. It happens when they have no responsibilities - like having to help feed the family. They live easy meaningless lives with too many rights and no real responsibility. The result is an attitude of entitlement and contempt for everything. Add the steady stream of "embarrased-to-be-American-ism" the left leaning news media and politicians pour into their unsophisticated undiscriminating little brains of mush and you have a recipe for teens hating everything. It is only since the advent of the baby-boomers that all of these factors have come together for such large numbers.

More like underwhelmed it, but yes, comment moderation should be off soon, as their attention span is short and they will be flitting off to find another home shortly. Or not, in which case, I will have wasted a lot of their time here, and upped my traffic--both fine outcomes.

Doc, you've studied some teenagers, albeitpretty screwed up ones. Isn't there always some disillusionment associated with the transition from primary-school-aged child to high-school-aged proto-adult? Is this America-bashing just a symptom of that disillusionment, or is it something new and more extreme?

This mindset- wherein America is always wrong, or that America and its government and society is the worst thing that has ever happened t o humankind, is a view that widespread in the city that I live in. Ann Arbor, MI, home to the Univ of Michigan, and is a town that isa Berkeley, CA wanna-be.
It is not just uninformed, immature teenagers trying to be "cool", who hold such negative viewsofour country. Most of the University crowh, including thefacultyand staff of U-M, and the majority of the residents of ths town who prously self-identify as "Progressives" or "liberals" hold these negative views.
No wonder most of the kids who are students of the local public schools, and students ta the University are indoctrinated t o grow up to become self-hating Americans.

I oncehad a female, "leftist", Political Science professor tell me that Hugo Chavez of Venezuela was a "legit" leader, whereas Pres Bush wasnt. According toher, Chavez was elected in a "legitimate, open, and clean, election", whereas, Bush supposedly "stole" the 2000 and 2004 elections. And she really believed it too, and got real mad whenI laughed at her!!!!!

Bugs,

I think that teens can be disillusioned, yes, but they are also highly influenced by what their peers are doing and what is going on in their milieu. If the schools, teachers and others in their environment are fueling hatred for the US, they might react by taking on that hatred and or conforming to what they are told if their peers are doing so. However, there are some free-thinkers for whom this method actually backfires. I know kids who sit in the back of the room texting what an idiot the teacher is when he is spouting off hatred for America. So, I think it depends on the kid, what they hear at home, and what their school environment is like.

What happened is that the teens who actually rebelled - 40 or 50 years ago - are now in charge of our education system and preoccupied with making sure nobody rebels against them.

I have a serious question about anti-US, socialist indoctrination in public schools.

1) Is it really as rampant as conservative blogs say?

I went to a middle-class public school in Cleveland, Ohio in the 80s, with no such influence. In fact, when I was in the 5th grade, it was 1984, and a social studies class had a mock vote on Reagan vs. Mondale. Reagan won 15-6, among this 5th grade class.

Today, I don't have kids yet, but suffice it to say, I aim to put them in a top public school in the SF Bay Area, like Cupertino or Fremont Mission. Is anti-US propaganda rampant, or is the school still 'normal'.?

2) Is it effective for me, as a future parent, to bring this up in PTA meetings, and sort of force political indoctrination to stay out of the classroom?

3) Will kids be forever brainwashed, or will they grow out of the indoctrination as they eventually become adults? I do see that young voters age 22-30 are no more left-wing than the rest of the population, so either a) indoctrination was still not that bad in their day, or b) it does not effect them in the long run.

Please help me with a realistic assessment of how bad it really is (or isn't).

Danny,

As someone who went to U of M for my MBA, around the time of the 2000 election, I can tell you that among US Citizen MBA students, about 70% supported Bush and 30% supported Gore, as per polls in the student paper.

Of course, MBA students tend to be business minded, and are not 'residents of Ann Arbor' to the extent that they go to big cities after they graduate. But for 2 years, they are member of the AA community, supporting the local establishments like Ulrich's, Ricks, Scorekeepers, Connor O'Neil's Leopold's, etc.

Helen, invite your oldest daughter to begin a hobby. If she reads "Less Than Words Can Say" by Richard Mitchell, she'll be equipped to begin observing whether 100% of the people she deals with don't think 80% of the time, or 80% of the people she deals with don't think 100% of the time.

"According to Mitchell, this bureaucratic jargon is turning us into a nation of baffled, inept, frustrated, and--ultimately--violent people, and the public schools are to blame. For the past thirty-five years, they have taught children to socialize rather than to read, write, and cipher--the only disciplines that foster clear language and logical thought. Mitchell's alarming conclusion is that our schools are turning out illiterates who will never manage their lives--because, lacking 'the power of language,' they can't think."

After she starts, email and we can make the game more exciting.

kmg: In answer to your first question, yes. I was in public high school during Bush's first term, and I knew all too well that most of my teachers had Lefty agendas. It eventually got so exasperating that I reverted to home-schooling. Mind you, this was in Arizona, which is a pretty center-right state. I can't imagine what it would have been like in California or the Great Lakes.

@helen: "In answer to your first question, yes. I was in public high school during Bush's first term, and I knew all too well that most of my teachers had Lefty agendas."

How about the schools that called in grief counselers to help their students cope with Bush getting re-elected? If that isn't disguised indoctrination.

Those same "professionals" didn't seems to be bothered with Bill Clinton's absolutely false teaching of their students that sexual behavior isn't really sexual behavior.

As many votes as the democrats buy, as much of the news media is left wing activism disguised as journalism, and as much of the schools as they control under the guise of education, it's a miracle we aren't a socialist country already.

yes quasi, its the amount of hate, the unfocused hate many teens have today.

In the UK, they are thinking of reducing the voting age to get the young votes, Because adults are not voting, they see what the world is like and know that both parties or all parties are the same, the same self serving idiots, out for what they can get.

Theres been a scandal in the UK, about expenses politicians can claim. This all adds to the fact that people think they deserve everything on a plate, the can do a useless course or degree, and walk into any job, then after a few years they realise the world isnt like that.

These kids, for they are still children, have no idea of the real world. They may feel something is wrong with the system, but they havent the experience to verbalise it.

I beleive we went into iraq for the wrong reasons, the WMD, when if it was sold to us as a humanitarian to get rid of a dictator then i would have agreed with it. Wrong reason, Right outcome.

I lived through maggie thatchers 17years in the UK. then we had labour, for 10 years plus.. and experiencing that, has made me sour on politics, and politicians. I now vote for those who annoy me less. Not for anyone, but against the other. All parties here, are the same and interchangable. and i can see in a lot of cases the same in the american government system.

Presumably, most of the 20-somethings I work with have been through this "indoctrination," yet they seem to hold diverse political opinions. That leads me to conclude that while the indoctrination may exist, it doesn't work very well.

I've been going back to school recently - a large, diverse community college. The freshmen just coming from high school seem to be interested in one thing: What's going to be on the next test. The focus isn't on the subject necessarily - it's on getting an A. On one hand, this gives politically-oriented instructors a way to reward the expression of "correct" beliefs. On the other, it means the students aren't taking the actual beliefs all that seriously - just the rewards for expressing them. Cynical but effective.

Argh. I don't want to try to turn this into an Iraq debate, but WMD were not the primary reason that we went into Iraq, and mercurior's comment just points up the propagandist agenda of the MSM. Fact is, Iraq was a State Sponsor of terrorists (sending payments to the families of suicide bombers), and had been flaunting the agreements signed at the end of Gulf War I, including developing conventional missiles prohibited by the ceasefire agreement, as well as shooting at our planes multiple times. I was as angry at Clinton for not invading Iraq during the '90s as I was for any of the other things he did while in office.

KMG, I believe my public school teachers and even in college, did a decent job at attempting to be neutral about their political views or at least not bashing Republicans. However, I live in the very conservative state of Utah. If I have kids, I will probably put them in public school. If I can afford it I might put them into an advanced private elementary so they can excel in junior high and high school.

Trust: it's a miracle we aren't a socialist country already.

We are closer than we should be and it will be worse if Obama or Clinton gets elected. What is interesting is how many countries are realizing the problem and moving right and we keep on moving left: Canada, Mexico, France, Germany and South Korea.

"What is interesting is how many countries are realizing the problem and moving right and we keep on moving left: Canada, Mexico, France, Germany and South Korea."

Things go in cycles. Jimmy Carter was such a disaster that in SEVEN Presidential elections after Carter, Democrats never won 50% of the vote again. Carter did more to ensure a generation of GOP dominance than Reagan, Gingrich, Limbaugh, or Rove did.

We may have to repeat the cycle again, through Obama. People have to experience real leftism, in order to become appalled enough to vigorously oppose it.

That is why Eastern Europe, etc. are so pro-US and low-tax today.

I am very worried about sending my future kids to a public school where there is systematic and constant anti-US indoctrination.

It does appear, however, that one region of the country is no better or worse than another, in this regard. Top Bay Area schools will not necessarily have any more than the public schools in Arizona, Ohio, or Pennsylvania.

I don't believe in home schooling, nor do I want to spend the money on private schools. I guess my only options are :

1) Hope for vouchers
2) Hope that I can make enough noise in PTA meetings, and notify pro-US blogs about the school so that they pressure the school, when leftist incidents happen.
3) Hope that my child is not brainwashed by this.

Again, during my elementary school years in Ohio (1980-85), there was NONE of this. It was quite pro-US.

I am and have been more concerned with bureaucrats than elected officials. These folks have their jobs for life. I consider teachers, professors, and the like, to be government bureaucrats. The teachers' unions have the teachers by the short and curlies. You play their way, or you are not "protected". A little fear added to have them walk the straight and narrow.

The bureaucracy of this nation (U.S.) is decidedly left. The MSM seems to have always been decidedly left. They just never said so until it began to be brought forward by those who are not. Otherwise, why would they have so much against Fox? Crush the alternative view before it grows teeth. May the non left ground swell become a tsunami.
