Finding Missing Items: A Relationship RorschachTest?
After reading the Dear Prudence letter and response here, did you wonder if the saying "Honesty is the best policy" was becoming a thing of the past? Well, apparently, it's not as evidenced by this charming story out of New York (Thanks JG):
Compare this woman's actions to the sneaky thief in the Dr. Prudence column and how she dealt with her boyfriend. I think the camera-finding couple have a better future, don't you?
At dusk on New Year's Eve, Erika Gunderson got into a taxi in New York City and entered a digital-age mystery. Sitting on the back seat was a nice Canon digital camera. Gunderson asked the driver which previous passenger might have left it, but the cabbie didn't seem to care. So Gunderson brought it home and showed it to her fiance, Brian Ascher. They decided that the only right thing to do was to find the owner.

Good on them for making the effort and returning the camera.
Shame on those who would have kept it.
Let this be a lesson for everyone. Delete those naked pictures of yourself BEFORE you go on vacation. You might lose your camera.
Some of the electronics devices I own allow an area on the device that allows you to input some data like your name and phone number. Always good in case you misplace the device. I wish my camera had this feature.

Speaking from personal experience Cham!? ;)
cham -
How about if you print your name & number on a sheet of paper and take a photo of it? Wouldn't that work?
Great story, Dr. Helen. Thanks for the pointer.
Campy,
"Great story, Dr. Helen. Thanks for the pointer."
Sure, it can't be snark, doom and gloom about human nature all the time on this blog, can it?
I was sweating bullets one week while I had lost my wallet. The next time I went into the post office, it was in my mailbox in the lobby!
Two days ago, I made a purchase with a $20 bill. The cashier was distracted and talking to a co-worker and gave me two $20 bills back. I said, "I think you're overdoing it..." I'd like to say that this led to be getting laid, but that's only in the fantasy pages. I was told thanks, and kept my self-respect for doing the right thing.
Wow! Talk about going above and beyond.
Cham - leave the naked pictures. It might motivate someone to return the camera. :-)
Dadvocate,
Or it could motivate someone to take up stalking. Seriously,I wouldn't want nude pics on a camera left in someone's hands that I didn't know--they might just end up on MySpace or FaceBook with some hilarious (or not) comments.
No worries guys, I am sure some of my naked pics have already made their way on to the Internet somewhere, the camera just has the ones that I haven't edited yet, that's all.
Now THIS is funny! The thread starts about a whole family of sparkling honest people, and now we are talking about nude pics!
How quickly we revert to form!

Helen - Agreed. Unless Playboy is paying you big bucks, I don't recommend nude pix, ever.
The couple in this story aren't just casually honest, they work to be honest. I think that gives them a better than average chance to stay married. There are always temptations to lie or to say nothing or (fill in the blank), but marriage isn't just a commitment, it takes commitment. That begins with honesty.
Thanks Cham-- God if all the nude pics of myself on my camera got on the Internet , millions of women across the world would be chasing me-- in addition to the thousands who are obsessed with me now !
Whew ! The steps you have to go to when you are as hot and gorgeous as Cham and I !
It's nice to have a story about people taking the time to do the right thing - especially in NYC!
There are several things here--I for one believe that first and foremost, virtue is its own reward, and doing the right thing is the right thing and we don't need to go farther.
But I will. While it doesn't always work out this way, it is not uncommon for doing the right thing to lead to pleasant adventures of one sort or another.
Ripping somebody off rarely does.
what a great story!!
Looks, too, like Ascher didn't fall far from the tree:
Enter some fresh eyes. Ascher's mother, Nancy, and sister, Emily Rann, scoured the pictures for clues he might have missed. Nancy was particularly confident, having reunited people with their lost belongings before. She once found a California woman's wallet in a cab in Florence, Italy, and spent all day on her trail before making a handover at an American Express office.
one of the most valuable things we can leave our children is values
kudos to the whole (and future) Ascher/Gunderson clan.
Virtue is it's own reward.

So is nudity!
I'd be proud if anyone found MY nude pics! :D
I found a digital camera last summer at a mini-golf course. There was a sticker with a law firm's info on it. I called and the secretary seemed completely non-interested in helping me.
Luckily I heard some kids talking about how "they were dead meat for losing it". They knew what sticker was on it and I gave it right back.
I can't imagine how hard it would be to return a camera from a cab. I hope they have good luck returning it, if not - I'd keep it in good conscience. What more can they do except maybe put up an ad on Craig's list?
