Lunch in NYC

with Ann Althouse. Glenn and I were here for the Popular Mechanics Breakthrough conference which was fascinating but first, we met up with Ann at a restaurant on the West side. We had a lovely lunch and then Ann and I went shopping--it's New York, you have to go shopping. And thanks Ann for being one of those types that talk your shopping companions into buying things--I love my new shoes!

Dr. Helen!

Ann has all these comments, and you have none! Thus, I fill a void. Ah, NYC shopping...that sounds like a blast! An excellent picture, also.
I like your blog a lot; keep up the good writing.

NYC shopping? Ho Humm - but then again, I guess it's because I live here, and I'm a guy.

There were so many more "guy" stores 20 years ago - Hobby shops, real electronics stores (not the rip off places), etc etc - 90% of them are gone

kg2v,

When I lived in NYC, I never went shopping. But I think visiting is different. Anyway, that is too bad that so many of the hobby shops etc. are gone--at the Popular Mechanics conference I went to, they were talking about people not being able to tinker as much because of all of the advanced technology, so perhaps not as many of these shops are in existence because of that. Too bad because fixing stuff yourself is good to know.

Man, your smile lights up that store, underexposed though it may be.

Shoe shopping in Manhattan! Woo and Yay! But I am disappointed there is not only nophoto modeling the shoes, but not even the barest description? Louboutin covered pumps with red soles? Frye boots?
Kicky little plaid flats? Demure navy satin kitten heels? Those sneaker with little wheels in them?

Dr Helen's shoes, let her show us them.

Sarahw,

We went to a shoe store called Arche and they had the most comfortable shoes. I have been wearing the same shoes for years because I won't wear shoes that hurt. I bought a pair of black suede pumps and some sort of beige colored flats that are adorable. You can get an idea of the style of the shoes if you look here:

br549,

Hey, comfortable stylish shoes are important! Yesterday, I walked all over NYC with some pretty ugly shoes and my feet were killing me. Don't worry though, we'll move to more serious topics soon--although Manolo the shoe blogger would think this was a serious topic.

Oh, I know that she's disgusted (oh why's that)
Cause she's feeling so abused. (oh that's too bad)
She gets tired of the lust, (oh I'm so sad)
but it's so hard to refuse.
How can you say that I'm too old,
when the angels have stolen my red shoes.
(Elvis Costello 1977)
Oh, I said "I'm so happy, I could die."
She said "Drop dead," then left with another guy.
That's what you get if you go chasing after vengeance.
Ever since you got me punctured this has been my sentence.
Oh I used to be disgusted
and now I try to be amused.
But since their wings have got rusted,
you know, the angels wanna wear my red shoes.
Red shoes, the angels wanna wear my red shoes

Just visiting from the Althouse blog, I would just like to say that you seem to be a very intelligent and personable as well as being a very tasty piece of bacala. Mr. Instapundit is a very lucky nerd. All the best.

Can you explain a little about the Popular mechanics Breakthrough conference? What was it about. I'm interested.

I mean, I DID read all the shoe posts.

Yeah, shoes are great but what about about the conference? I can do both shoes AND mechanics. I bought new shoes today too.

it's interesting that
there are
a gazillion comments
over on althouse
taking you to pieces
bit by bit
inside and out

yet no one
especially downtownlad
shows up here to tell you
to your face
what a horrible rotten
ugly person you are

do you think it's because
they're mean miserable
little cowards...
or because they're too
stupid and lazy
to find their way here...

or maybe it's just because
life is so much easier
in the perfumed troll
garden that althouse
cultivates

Br549,

You can read all about the Popular Mechanics conference at Instapundit--complete with pictures. We also did a podcast with some of the inventors and scientists who won awards and will have that up later this month.

Blogging Cockroach,

Let them stay over there! I have heard worse about myself and don't care.

You know, watching women on the sidewalk, high heels have GOT to hurt the feet, legs, and be killer on the lower back. Not to mention how easily it appears that one could twist an ankle.

Every movie I've ever seen where a woman needs to break into a run, the heels come off, pronto. My daughters each have a pair or two, and never wear them. They were purchased for a particular function, and literally THROWN back into the bottom of the closet after said function was over.

Wait...I'm - gleep - talking -urp- glop - shreeeek - about shoes! Quick ! Somebody say something political or scientific!

I was standing outside a downtown coffeeshp in Ann Arbor a few months back.. Saw this rathrr fat and heavy lady walk down the sidewalk, wearing a pair of high heeled shoes- the stitetto kind of heels. The sidewalks in Ann Arbor are not the most well maintained ,and there are big cracks in them.
One heel gotstuck in a sidewalk crack, and down she went!!! And broke her ankle, and she started screaming. Well, we ran to her, untwisted her anke and called theEMTs to coem and take her to the ER. of course she screamed a lot( part of it was probably from the embarrasment of it all).
I tell my women friend this story when i see them wearing high-heels. It is a stupid fashion trent, really.

Amazing, the banter and blather lunch in Manhattan can bring about. I was at Ann's blog reading through it. I'd mention a couple posts and the posters themselves, but Manhattan and its people don't matter to me any more than I do to them. Two entirely different, parallel worlds. Ditto on the beliefs.

Three of my favorite bloggers all together (ok, two of the three live together).

This does look surprisingly like the picture that Ann posted on her blog. Is it coincidence?

Hi Helen, we just missed in New York where I was visiting my son for several days. Instead of shoes, I went to the Rembrandt exhibit at the Met....and did a lot of walking. Also went to a screening of a new little documentary called "A Table in Heaven."

Love NYC and am now in DC...hope you had fun!
