The PC Police--Coming to a School near You
So it's okay to ask a Mormon student if she has 10 moms but if she shoots back with "That's so gay," then she gets in trouble? Give me a break. I hope the family of this young lady wins their lawsuit against the school and strikes a blow against the PC "educators" who think they can bully students into speaking in lingo only they approve of. But even if they lose, no one should stand for this type of scrutiny of our school children.

The school intends to record the disciplinary action into her academic record, so she'll be branded with a hate crime. The parents really have no other recourse.
We'd had a similar incident occur locally, over (IIRC) 'don't be so gay'. A little girl had apparently said this to two little boys who were goofing around. I don't think that she'd even uttered the phrase in anger. Well the school went ballistic and wanted to mark her record and have her reprogrammed. The parents apparently waged a scorched earth campaign and introduced suits against everyone they could think of, even the little boys' parents. Once it became apparent that there would be significant costs involved, the school apparently relented.

It's too bad that it has come to this, but lawsuits and making it expensive to pull this crap on parents and kids is probably the only way to handle it if the staff does not back down.
IF (I wasn't there) the part about differential treatment (do you have 10 mothers, and other forms of teasing vs. the "g-word") are true, sue the SNOT out of them. Burn the ground and sow salt. . .
I can handle "we're SO sensitive." I can also handle "we support free speech, so such it up and deal with it." But picking and choosing really cranks me off. It really smacks of "this kind of harassment is okay, but that kind is bad" -- PC crap run amuck.
And no, I'm not a Mormon. I don't even KNOW any Mormons. I just want to see the fair application of a doctrine, whatever that doctrine is. Especially where minors are concerned. Grrr!
Obviously, the school had no problems with religiously oriented insults aimed at the girl. If the school is going to outlaw the "gay" comments then other outlawing would follow. After all, freedom of religion is a Constitutional right and government run schools allowing harassment regarding religious beliefs could be interpreted as violating this right.
The phrase the girl uttered is quite common amongst youth. You here it on reality shows, sit-coms, etc. Once again, the educators are showing how stupid they are.
At what point will public pressure move schools to be more in tune with the families that send their children to our schools?
If we had a true free market educational system, private education would be cheap with multiple view points easy to find. As it is, the public school system is more interested in policing then teaching.
It is unfortunate that government funded schools are largely protected from the market forces of delusioned parents. But as long as the government represents the liquidity of the education market, the power to browbeat 8 year-old girls for thinking incorrect thoughts will remain in the hands of the bottom 25% of college graduates.
see the word gay, doesnt always mean homosexual, it can mean happy in the original sense, they could make a case of oh your so happy, or dont be so happy.
its just a word, kids dont see race and sexual orientation, its just words to them. but thought crimes, word crimes,
could they arrest us in the north of england, as we burn faggots(firelighters of sorts) and we eat them as well (a meat ball type thing). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faggot_(food)
word police, newspeak.
What in **** happened to the teacher taking the kid aside and saying "You shouldn't use that word in that way. It is inappropriate." ???? For most kids that would end the matter.
Hah! Or have both kids taken before the principle for a LOUD lecture on polite language.
They seem to be policing primary schools with shotguns instead of common sense!
I forgot who it was that said that when you see Gov't employees doing stuff like this (or Congress passing stupid laws) it's a sign that they really don't have enough to do, and have to justify their jobs somehow
"That's so gay" is sort of valley-speak for "That's so wrong" or "That's so lame", it doesn't necessarily have anything to do with homosexuality. The offended girl used it appropriately, if the school did any research on the phrase they would have no grounds for their actions. Hence, politically correct language has nothing to do with the context.
If you love your kids, you'd pull them out of a school that treats others' kids like this. I don't care if you have to sacrifice your quality of life to do it. You became a parent, your material happiness is subordinated to the security and upbringing of your child. I would rather live barely above the poverty line and know my kids aren't subject to this crap, than enjoy the fruits of American materialism and see my kids sent through the same reeducation camps that tried to process me.
If just 10% of the families in this country would leave the public schools, it'd cause a national crisis that would at least force fundamental reform because of the damage it would do to the funding of public schools.
Wow, goes to show how out of touch I am -- I didn't know that was a common slang term these days.
I do happen to be a Mormon (so now you know me, Jim! :) But even if I weren't, I'd have to agree with the comments on this trail. If you're going to discipline for one type of name-calling, you should do it for another. A stern word would have ended the situation -- there's no need for this to go into her record.
but for some the word is just a word, it has no meaning.
50 years ago you could have used the term gay in songs, are they homophobic now, no.. why. because they are just words.
the emotional content of certain words has been increasing, why, because it divides people. theres an alleged comedy show, called little britain, they talk about gays all the time, insulting them effectively but its ok because the actor is gay.
words are just words, word usage evolves over time, gay was happy 50 odd years ago, now it means homosexual, what will it be in another 50 years, just a word to get bent out of shape over a word not used in a derogatory manner is ridiculous.
miket-
You became a parent, your material happiness is subordinated to the security and upbringing of your child.
To an extent. But this logic has been co-opted by the male-bashing movement. Parenthood does not equal slavery.
I'm a teacher and most of the time when kids say "that's gay" it is completely interchangeable with "that's lame."
I do sometimes point out that they probably shouldn't use "gay" that way because they don't mean "happy" or "homosexual."
But I would have jumped all over the "Do you have 10 moms?" thing so fast, the girl wouldn't have had time to respond for herself.
Some of my absolute favorite kids are Mormon, and they get this crap all the time (totally mainstream LDS, not any weird splinter groups). But I would have shut it down no matter who the student being teased was.
I don't try to tell my students what to think or say someplace else, but I try to keep them from saying insulting and offensive stuff as much as I can. But I don't allow any PC tirades either.
I mean, I try to limit their insulting each other in my presence. I really do try to allow people to continue to think and believe whatever they want to. It's not my job to tell you what to think about Mormons or gay people. But I think I can tell you that harassing somebody isn't going to happen in my class.

I wish we had more teachers like you--many see it as their job to indoctrinate students into the correct PC way to think. They do it without even thinking about it, it is so ingrained.
There used to be these things called "good manners." We got rid of them because they were proven to inhibit the growth of our true, natural, and authentic selves. Unfortunately, it turns out that our true, natural, and authentic selves were often rotten little bastards who take perverse joy in inflicting pain and embarrassment on other true, natural, and authentic selves in the course of what should be normal, neutral, and painless social interactions. Which is why we had those "good manners" things in the first place - keep us from hurting each other.
PC is what we have now instead.
My name is Mark Eramo.
I am 46 years old and finally coming out. I am gay. My hair is falling out, but I'm going to get plugs very soon. I use cocaine daily.
Please forgive me - I need to be fucked by a little boy.
This kind of stuff makes me support Mitt Romney for President a little more. Perhaps if he were, there would be less religious bigotry.
