Great article. Thanks for the link. I couldn't agree more. We need more Burke and Strauss, less Coulter and Malkin.
Incidentally, the current climate in academia also short changes liberal thinking. In the 80's, we got Locke, Hobbs and Mill. In the 90's, they became a bunch of dead white guys who opressed women and didn't care about slavery. In the 80's we had Fredrick Douglass. In the 90's, he was just an Uncle Tom, begging to be let in the Massa's house, rather than burning it down. So we got women's studies, african american studies, peace studies, queer studies, now we are getting fat studies and pretty soon we'll have Me studies. It's as if Liberalism and Conservatism were invented in the last decade, rather than being centuries old.

Twenty years ago, I got a decent education. Currently, where core curricula and Survey of Western Civ courses are out of fashion as they merely promote the false notion of the supremacy of western partriarchial culture, I wonder what mom and dad are getting for their $120K.

Shucks, I'm disappointed that ada47 didn't reveal where Coulter and Malkin's books are on the required reading list for any class.

The "dead white males" epithet predates the 1990s by a bunch. It was in the 1980s that Jesse Jackson could appear at that junior university in Palo Alto, CA and lead mouth-breathers in a chant of "Hey hey ho ho, Western Civ has got to go." Years of spreading fertilizer and seeding that meme had taken place in the groves of academe before the Rev showed up to harvest the crop.

I recommend to the younger folk of my family the advice of Dennis Prager: "If you must go to college, pick the cheapest one that you can afford."

Dr H: did you read the comments to this particular post at Alicu?
Quite an interesting, and intelligent, discussion, on both sides of this issue. Bauerlein's not inconsiderable shortcomings are discussed.

I was talking to a young college student who was complaining about the lack of incentive working at her health food store job. "If I work hard, I get paid too little, it I just show up, I get paid too little. All I want is a job where I get paid more when I work hard." I smiled and she asked why, "I am smiling because you are a budding capitalist." She looked concerned, "Isn't that a bad thing?" "Which is worse, being a budding capitalist, or being stuck in a bad job?"

She smiled and asked where she might apply for her new job. So I have hope.

I went to college a long time ago, and sat through 3 required semesters of Kant, Hobbes, Mill, etc., and, frankly, never understood a word of what I was hearing. Its not that I was stupid, it was mainly that my brain was not ready for such meat. I think my experience was similar to that of a lot of students of my era. The aforesaid scholars had a lot to say, but it was presented in a fashion that was over the head of most of us.
