Fear

I find it interesting that so many angry lefty bloggers come here to troll on posts about the Scarlet R. Now, it could just be that the guy at Alicublog who mentions me, it seems, in every other post, could just have a crush on me, but I will not flatter myself with that theory at this point. You would think that a relatively small blog like mine would not interest them: after all, there are bigger fish out there to fry.

However, my guess is that it is fear that makes the angry leftists link to me or troll to try and shut people here up. Why such a threat from a few thousand people a day on my blog? Because two or three thousand readers could go out and talk to two or three thousand friends about libertarian or right leaning ideas and gasp! they might listen. Extreme leftists have a lot invested in keeping the right's views out of the media, schools and universities. That means making people on the right afraid or embarrassed about stating politically incorrect views. But everytime we stick up for a student Republican or professor, etc. the lefties' fear and discomfort become a little greater, their monopoly on these institutions is broken a little further and the threat causes them to act out in anger or make aggressive blog remarks. But hey, I am doing my part here because as long as they write about me, or waste their time posting on my blog, there is less chance they will be out in the real world pushing their agenda. So keep on coming by, boys. And thanks for the traffic!

Yeah Helen!!!

You've got a real ... purpose here now. To make the world safe for "white shitbags" and elevate language to offense.

Aping the left's tactics, you are. "That language offended me." It's so cute. "If they can do it, so can we?" Righties have feelings too! Indeed.

Good thing you're just talking, not really raising sons, is all I can say. If you get this bent at a few bad words, imagine when you see how guys really settle their differences. I suspect you and Glenn would be filing lawsuits left and right...

I thought your point was we were all so angry and afraid we had no true "whit"?

Let me ask an honest question:

How long do you really think you'll be able to keep this victimization theme up?

Isn't it really a trend, picking these news and school items out and victimizing whites and men?

Or do you see a long-term to eradicate true masculinity in the upper classes of American society? Face it, in the old days, you get called a name, you either slug it out or shout back bigger and better.

Running to the authorities to report the offense of being called a "white shitbag" (gasp!) would be like running to the authorities everytime you're called name. (Now regardless of what you hear or read in the academic circles, most folks consider this a part of life, not an actionable offense.)

I repeat:
It might be easier for your child being raised like this because she's a girl. Still, I wonder if she's been raised as a victim, or will have the resiliance to overcome benign situations and not make a career of it.

So since when is escalating the situation is the way to solve the situation? Also how is Helen's post not shouting back bigger and better?

Sure if I walk down a street and have an insult thrown at me I'll handle it in my way. Which by the way will not include a trip to the police station, nor will it degrade into childish name calling as you suggest it should. I have a responsibility to be the adult and not the child if that in your eyes makes me less a man, well it’ll be hard but I’ll have to get over that somehow.

Do I think that my son or daughter ears will fall off or they will be scared for life if a person walking down the street calls me a shitbag, no. Now if their teachers do it… trust me… it’s on.

I mean is there not a difference between a stranger doing it and a person who is responsible for the education of my child or other peoples children doing it? I understand and I appreciate that in this case the person who did the insulting apologized and I leave it up to the insultee to handle it from there.

For me it comes down to the same visceral reaction that is damning Michael Richards and Mel Gibson, who in there own way had the filters the normally exist in our speech removed, one from anger the other from alcohol. This is a college professor who feels the need to insult a student at the college and show in that brief moment is true feelings for those who have a different opinion, the are shitbags to him. The problem is those shitbags parents are paying his salary.

I love to see Republicans whiiiiine. I come here for the humor, not because I'm afraid they're adopting successful tactics. It's funny to see these stories overblown because .... even with an admission of wrongdoing, an immediate apology, and the weak language "white scumbag", that's pretty much all you got.

Hence my question about sustaining this as a long term trend.

Basically, what you got here is a foreign-born professor who lost his cool and got agitated by the intellectual immigration display of the student. The young man got called a name -- and received an apology and an admission by the professor that he lost his cool outside of class and was in the wrong.

Instead of him moving on and viewing the situation as an isolated case -- one individual who took responsibility for his actions offended him -- the young man is encouraged to wallow in his victimhood. "Dr."Helen and other Republicans seize upon him as an example of how shunned and threatened conservatives on campus are.

Thats demasculinizing discourse -- making only "acceptable" words fit. I understand the "victim" card plays well in many circles; doesn't make it any sadder for the men, and future men, affected by such nonsense.

I don't think it has anything to do with you being a woman that intimidates them. That fact probably infuriates them, it's the fact that you can eloquently defend libertarian ideas that scares them above all else. They're used to being able to pat themselves on the back about how clever they are compared to those "drooling idiots" that believe in right-of-center ideas.

In my college Poli Sci class, I was the libertarian Computer Science major. I was despised by the leftist cadre in the class far more than the conservative who piped up (usually after me) because like you, I took the ideological war to the left. They hate it when someone does that, and usually it's a libertarian, not a conservative today, who will bluntly remind them of Inconvenient Truths like Pinochet was a choir boy who lived in poverty to give all of his wealth to the needy compared to their ideological brethren in power.

If they don't hate you, you know something is wrong with your approach because hating their adversaries is what they do best.

Yes, the lefties are quite afraid. The mountain tops are too hot. They must stomp out all opposition to their dogma.

This is the quote, from a Leftist troll, that amazed me:

"Point is,

But the Left and the Democratic part are all about portraying people (blacks, hispanics, women, gays, etc) as victims. The have developed an entire asymmetrical philosophy about it---when Group X complains, they are rightful victims. When Group B complains, they are whining losers.

And the best part is that Leftists get to decide, all on their own, who is in what group!

I can think of few better examples of elitism. They know better than anyone else does.

All disciples of the "social justice" religion are obsessed with the perception that some arbitrarily designated group has more power (not the dictionary definition) than they. Anyone in that designated group is a legitimate target of, well, pretty much anything. Anyone in that group who suggests that this might not be something they're willing to accept is acting in contradiction to their "obvious" power, therefore, condemned as whining.

This is a common theme ... many women do it when men get insulted by their little "jokes", the non-rich do it when the rich complain about having to pay "their fair share" of taxes, minorities do it when whites point out that affirmative action is de facto discrimination, and, naturally, liberals do it when non-liberals use their own techniques upon them and point out the double standards in the response to those techniques.

In other words, any liberal who comes on here and comments about "whining" is making an admission that they feel powerless, inferior, subordinate, etc., despite all evidence to the contrary.

Yes, it's fear. But they aren't afraid of you, Helen ... or me, or other commenters here, or anyone who has the temerity to pick up the gauntlet.

They're afraid of being forced to recognize their own impotence, and the fact that it's of their own creation.

At home, we peck away at our laptops, outraged at how the Rethuglicans have taken over the world, sitting under our posters for Che and in favor of free trade coffee.

We are pretty quiet at work, and use these types of posts to sound tougher, better educated, and all around cool. And since we were the ones no one ever wanted on their fourth grade kickball team, our speaking truth to power here by insulting and cursing others makes us feel better.

Sure, we can't name our representative and are shady on one of our two senators, but we know how the world ought to work: goateed barristas who skated by in college and have no prospects should run things.

Demasculinizing, Anon 9:07? What twisted version of "masculine" are you working off of? Is is somehow not masculine to point it out when you are geting screwed? Is it men's duty to take unlimited abuse? Waht - do you think it'll get you laid or something? Just go ahead and pay the $20.

Whining about being a victim isn't masculine OR feminine - it's childish. And women who complain about being victims are manipulative little GIRLS who don't deserve to be called women. And the best way to make this point is to show them what it feels when the same trick is turned on them.

The same goes in spades for some hypocrtical jackass of an immigrant who presumes to make moral judgements of a country he is living off of. Here he is, in a position of power over students acting like he is the aggrieved one in the situation. He apologized? Big deal. Apology or not, he is unfit for any position of authority in that organization if he abuses his power that way.

The core issue is that the left arose as a moral crusade aginst some pretty horrible conditions in society, and has forced soem real improvements. Religious tolerance, child labor laws, Abolition and the Civil Rights Movement are example. Fine. And what we call the right in this country often is a wing of that left. This is the libertarian wing. So far so good. But then there is another wing of the right, the social conservatives, who don't have much good to show for their efforts. they invented Fundamentalism as a figleaf for their consciences under attack from the Abolitionists, and refined it into an emotional crutch after they lost their treasonous war. They defended segrgation almost to the death. Meanwhile on the left there is a very nasty totalitarian streak, a very mommyish tendency to dictate to other people how should act and live. Both these toitalitarian, moralizing tendencies are wicked and should be exposed to scorn and ridicule.

Y'know, that's like saying that talking about racism makes one a racist, or that fighting terrorism makes more terrorists. Helen's right on target with her analysis of the feminization of the modern male. Discussing the problem will lead to rectification, not magnification.

As far as victimization goes, only you can decide how things around you or happening to you affect you. The one thing that can never be taken away from you is your freedom to choose. So sure, you can choose to wallow in your victimhood -OR- you can choose to deal with it and overcome it (and CRUSH those who would make you a victim... but I digress).

Hi Tomcal:

Funny how many "anonymouses" are not me, but seemed to reply for me! I enjoyed your comments very much.

But this last "anonymouse" above---I think that is a clear case of projection. Probably couldn't cut it at Charbucks for a job, "Free Mumia" button or not.

It's like some people I saw elsewhere on this blog awhile back, claiming to be British, and virulently anti-American. When someone else brought up Lend-Lease, two of the anti-American Britons wrote that Lend-Lease started in the 1930s (it didn't), and that it was paid back in the 1970s (not true). They then went on to castigate the Marshall Plan for giving more money to the Germans and Japanese than the UK got...when the Japanese didn't get Marshall money, and the UK received more Marshall funds than Germany.

All of this was easy information to get, and there were lots of things about this topic for the Left and Right to disgree about. But the facts were wrong---and it suggested that the posters didn't care about the facts. They cared that they were "right."

I don't mind if people have strong opinions, either Right or Left. It is that so many of them are uniformed, and the information that should have been taught in school has been replaced by angry name-calling and self-satisfied certitude. Again, I see that on both sides, but the impolite people on this blog sure seem to be Left of center.

That is why I am happy to see a good sense of humor from people on all sides of our current societal divide.

Best wishes from another "anonymouse."

Anonymouse! I love it!

Here is a good example of this entire bias business.

It looks like Sandy Berger destroyed classified material that might make his former boss, Bill Clinton, look bad. It wasn't accidental, and looks clearly deliberate. And we'll never know what was really going on, while he was stuffing classified documents down his pants, or smuggling papers out of the National Archives and hiding them in a construction site.

I want to hear the Left condemn Berger's actions. To insist that he get the fine that he deserves, and spend time in prison, for violating the public trust so egregiously.

And I want to hear it without the "...well, Rethuglicans do it too, only worse."

Just sound off: Berger deserves prison time.

(sound of crickets).

Now, think about what the Left would say if a Republican did precisely the same thing for documents relating to the War on Terror (as Berger did). Do you think such a Republican would get community service and a fine?

That is the bias, right there.

For those of you on the Left who abhore any and all such illegal activities---regardless of party affiliation---I salute you. But my bet is that no one on the Left will be able to say that Berger deserves prison time without attempting to smear Republicans.

Just watch me be correct.

I have never ever heard a leftist complain about what Kofi has done.

The left loves the UN and never ever admits anything is wrong with the UN.

What about Kofi refusing to let General's Dallaire troops intervene to prevent the Rwanda massacre?

What about Kofi doing pretty much nothing about peace corps only giving food to young girls in exchange of sexual favors?

What about the fact that a relative of Kofi - the Morroco ambassador - is renting a place in NewYork registered in the name of Kofi, but is a place for low income people only who have to wait four years to get an apartment there?

The left never ever admits their heroes are bad people.

The left hates rich people, but Kerry married rich women TWICE!
And Kerry owns a bicycle that cost as much as a small car...

What about the fact that people who have invested many millions in the Carlyle groups are about 50/50 Democrats/Republicans?

Only the Republicans are evil ?

WHo knew that internet would become a tool to expose the left?

And that is one of the reason why the leftists are so angry; they control the Main stream Media, they control Universities but they can not do a thing about right wing bloggers.

Yes, I've infected a number of my "liberal" acquaintances just as you describe...

Ya know, I visit here frequently and until recently, I haven't seen much in the way of trolls. But it's kind of amusing to watch them, really. The theme is common and if any of them would take the time to read the set of comments here as a body and look for the obvious trends, they'd see it themselves, and then maybe they'd get embarassed and crawl back to wherever it is they came from.

But there are a couple of crystal-clear trends:

1) They can't really argue the truth of the point, so they attack the messenger (in this case, Dr. Helen).
2) They permit themselves the victim status, but deny it to others.
3) They tend to advertise a measure of false bravado, moving far to quickly to the "slug it out" mode long before any reasonable man would feel compelled do so (probably only becasue they can hide behind the anonymity of the Internet).

They may realize it themselves, but there's a simple truth on the examination that's going on here, the one that examines the behavior of the left versus that of the right: The left appears to not know the difference between claiming victimhood and demanding justice.

Your first post quoted Tom DeLay as saying "We don't attack," and you wonder why you're held up to such ridicule?

Keep it up -- it's brilliant satire.

Can I assume that the 'R' stands for "Remarkable"?

It is interesting that the lefty poster is so offended at having a lefty argument used against him. Suggesting that it is not manly to play the victim card is fairly astonishing and a pretty nervy position for a leftist to take. The whole point of the left, after all, is class warfare. And the truly amusing thing is that he knows that playing the victim card, an essential tool of the left, is wrong.

The left is dying. They may not know it yet, but they are toast. Their main pillar, Marxism, has been tried repeatedly and it has failed horribly each time. It is now living on as the crack cocaine of political thought.

And too many people that entered the left enticed by grand notions of social justice are horrified at their new fellow travellers: sadistic dictators, female circumcisers and terrorists.

We're coming for the left in the schools. It's now an ideological battlefield. And one of the many factors that will enable us is the ineptitude of the left in actually teaching the children. They were so busy indoctrinating, they never bothered to do any actual teaching.

And when the left loses the schools, it is over.

"Hatred and bile are all that remain, when your ideology is effectively, and constantly, repudiated by history and experience."

Yes. Stupid liberals. Let's invade Iran and democratize that. And then cut taxes and expect budget surplusses to magically appear. Whee!

Do you really want the left to "lose"? Look how poorly Republicans have done once they got power! More pork, new department, expanded medicare, on and on.
Conservatism works best when the liberals are actually in power, setting up their big government. It seems we don't have politicians that can make sacrifices based on small government ideology.

Of course I want what passes for the left of today to lose. Class war is a stupid organizational principle.

But it does not follow that I am a huge supporter of Republicans. I would say that I don't care all that much for most Republicans, but I simply cannot abide a democrat. At best democrats are deluded, useful idiots, at worst they are amoral traitors.

And how do we know how well Republicans do while in office? The press is overwhelmingly made up of their political enemies. They ignore the good, magnify the bad, and, if all else fails, they just make it up. For example, the economy has been a rip-roaring fun ride, but not if you read the New York Times. So, who you going to believe, the Times or your own lying eyes?

I'm not even sure we're losing in Iraq. The soldiers don't think we are. Neither do the Iraqis. There are no refugees and the economy is going through the roof.

Helen terrific post! But lets not forget that some of the most damaging attacks on the right side of the aisle come not from the left, but from the right whose Rules of Engagement guarantee defeat against the left.

For a long time it has been terribly disheartening to watch the Right attack those on the Right who used the Left's tactics against them. As if we were winning the culture battles and could afford to destroy our own warriors through absurd rules of engagement.

Ann Coulter springs to mind. She is relentlessly attacked not only by the left which is expected, indeed hoped for, but by the right which is neither expected nor hoped for.

To me, I see the difference between the left and right as one of how they treat the data. It is my hope that those of us on the right welcome hard facts whether they support or undermine our agenda. When the facts undermine our position, it is time to adjust the position. On this blog, I typically see MANY more conservative types admit to an error or appologize than I do liberals. That is because the facts matter to us, and when we are confronted with them, we feel compelled to understand and adjust.

I think that liberals have ideas and theories, and those guide them more than the facts. When inconvienent truths come up, they are ignored or denied. They are NOT investigated. Perhaps the people of the left are so committed to their ideology that they KNOW the facts must be in error, because their truth is their ideology. Of course some are just snake oil sellers, same as on the right.

I am more practical than that. My truth comes from my experience and trustworthy sources. If my theory is not working, I want to change the theory to something that WORKS. Accurate plans and ideas have a better chance of working when they are reality based.

That might also explain why the criticisms of the left are so often ad hominum, they lack facts. Of course, the thoroughly post modern do not even believe in facts, just individual subjectivities. Well, individual sunjectivities that are not the product of patriarchy, racism, sexism, etc. So I guess Helen gets bombed for having an undesirable subjective world view. Cause she does not hate men and thinks that women should be treated like responsible adults. Among other things.

"white shitbag" aside, a Republican congressman has essentially said "beware of Muslims entering the USA", a message, I might add may go straight to the ears of those Muslims in Iraq fighting for a democratic government WITH Americans (as opposed to against them).

Yeah, maybe they'll all join the insurgency, if this is what true Americans think. GW Bush certainly hasn't repudiated the statement. Talk about sticking a knife in the back of American soldiers with such Republican bigots in office here.

Trey: Yes the Iraqui economy does seem to be going through the roof. Since Labor Day Iraqi Dinar has risen against the USD from 1480/$ to 1424/$; and this with an annual Inflation rate of more than 50% in Iraq. U.S. soldiers are buying all the dinar they can to bring home, with the expectation that they will become more valuable as time goes by. (Source: Grants Interest Rate Observer, 12-15-06)

This seems to contradict my personal belief that the war in Iraq is unwinnable for cultural reasons. I may be wrong, maybe we can create a peaceful democracy there in a reasonabie time. On the other hand, there are probably not too many 25 year old U.S. soldiers trained in the dynamics of foreign currency exchange.

Time will tell. I'll be very interested to see the effect on the resistance and national stability when Saddam's death sentence is carried out. Unless he pulls a rabbit out of the hat, that will happen very soon, at the latest on Jan 25.

Do you think it should be televised? I do.

Actually, there are suppose to be a million Iraqi refugees in Syria. And if you don't count the shite and sunni neighborhoods moving around as displacement in Baghdad, then I suppose that is not a problem either.
