More of Your Cardiology Questions Addressed

A new medical blog, The Heart of the Matter, has been kind enough to answer some of the questions our readers asked about heart problems. If you would like to see if your question was addressed or just want more information on heart concerns, see Heart of the Matter Blog and scroll down to view questions and answers. One of the topics addressed is what firemen can do to reduce their risk of a heart attack--if this is a concern to you, check it out.

Dr. Helen: I applaud you for using the internet to bring together good questions and knowledgeable responses. Is this the "new math" of the millennium, in which "2 + 2 really does = 5"?

Hello Dr Helen

Thank you for the kind link to hmatter. That should be the last of the questions you sent us. Anyone who has any questions still yet to be answered is of course welcome to drop by and leave us an email/a comment and we will try to answer as many as possible. The blog is run by a currently practicing cardiologist so everyday details like patients and illnesses will still have to take priority.

Thanks again.

Hello, My 20 year old son was just told that he has an electrical problem with his heart is this the same as an arrhythmia. They want to do an electrical study but he does not want to do it. His heart beats fast sometimes and he has palpitations. Is he in immediate danger of something bad happening? Also I have suffered with similar an I was told I have an arrhythmia and not to worry if It does not bother me too much. Is this hereditary.

I am a new RN, my dad is 10 days post op from rotator cuff surgry,1/2 trough surg he went into afib, he is 65yo hx MI 2 year ago 4 stints. dad converted to SR after 11 hours. has been feeling extremely tired, fatigued, sleeps most of time, only taking tramadol for pain 1 tab at night(does not believe in pain meds)went back into dr for clearance to have next surgrey in 1 week. a discectomy,elect/kidney function labs all wnl,ekg showed afib again no way to determine length, has had no hx of a fib prior to surgrey, echo prior to 1st surgery shows valves are good.. dr. said even though no inr or pt/ptt ordered she feels he will not have clotting issues, she will not treat him until after surgery. I am concerned with clot formation, and unknown cause of Afib. I do not want to be one of those nurses who think she knows it all but I do not wish to loose my father., Is there really no danger in surgery while you are in afib? Or should I get 2nd opinion?
