Podcast on the Avian Flu with Senator Bill Frist and CPAC Bloggers
Have you given any thought to an outbreak of the Avian Flu? I didn't take it too seriously until doing some research and talking today to Senate Majority Leader, Bill Frist. This is an important podcast for all Americans as Senator Frist talks about the threat to the US, what private citizens can do to prepare and the problems with developing a vaccine. I must warn you, our audio was not the best, as we have construction workers digging up the phone lines in our neighborhood, but please listen anyway to this important interview.

Great interview with Senator Frist, Dr. Helen!
Anyone who is getting freaked out by this whole bioterrorism/avian flu business should know that Dr. Frist wrote a decent paperbook book about what "everyday people" should know about bioterrorism and related issues.
It's called "When Every Moment Counts: What You Need to Know About Bioterrorism from the Senate's Only Doctor." It is a paperback and worth a read.
remember the sars epidemic that would kill millions, killed about 1000 worldwide, remember the BSE panic, it would kill hundreds of thousands. remember swine flu in 1976. not to mention the ebola one in 1995
It's practically a state secret that the discovery of H5N1 in poultry dates back not to 1997 but rather to 1959, when it was identified in Scottish chickens
but there was a terrible outbreak of the related H5N2 among both chickens and turkeys in Pennsylvania in 1983-85 (17 million birds were destroyed) that appears to have originated as H5N1 in seagulls. So H5N1 has been flying around the globe for over four decades and hasn't done a number on us yet.

its a culture of fear, fear od disease, fear of terrorism (i live in the UK where we have and still have terrorism car bombs, petrol bombs from ireland for over 33 years) fear of everything basically. if we beleive everything thats told us, we would never leave home at all ever.
When you upload your podcasts to iTune could you please list the time length? I wanted to listen to some but had no idea how long they would be, so skipped them.

Senator Frist basically said that it is important to write in letters to the editor, call in to talk radio and talk at our local community meeings about having a plan in place for what to do in case of an outbreak. He stated that he is surprised that many communities around the US have no such plan in place. Next, he said to have one to two weeks of food available, medication for that long and a will in order! In addition, he stated that it is hard to get the flu vaccine made because of all the torts and law suits against vaccine manufacturers but the government is putting money into producing the vaccine. His main concern is that we are ill-prepared for the bird flu at this time.

You and Glenn are doing a great job with the podcasts! Love the format and the content. One quick suggestion would be to give a rundown on the musical credits at the very end. I find much of the music you choose for bumpers enjoyable and I know you reference the artists and albums in your blog posts, but I often listen to the file away from my computer and am too lazy to go back and check the post when I'm ingrigued by a musical selection. A quick blurb at the end that encapsulated this info and maybe vital information on your guests--book titles, blog URL's, regular radio or TV shows, etc--would be very helpful and much appreciated. Thanks!
Interesting that the president said he may need martial law to control the spread of avian flu, which has killed fewer than 200 people worldwide, and no one got upset, but after thousands have died of AIDS, it's illegal to test someone without their consent, and the Red Cross is blasted for restricting who can donate blood.

My guess is that the reason is psychological. People feel that they are "safe" from AIDS if they do not engage in certain behaviors but everyone has or has known someone with the flu. Also--AIDS carries a political connotation--the flu--an equal opportunity killer. Also--the Avian flu is not on people's radar screen, many simply do not care or think of it as a scare tactic and ignore it.

I love all things Joss Whedon. An interview with him would be great, but since he is such a gensis who surrounds himself with gensis, anyone associated with him would be a great interview. You could go all the way back to the beginning, Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Senerity and any other project he might have been associated with. Any character, actor, producer, writer director, et al.
One other thing. Mr. Glenn Reynolds... hmmmmm... Reynolds...

Mr Reynolds recently stated the soundtrack CD for the movie "Sleepless in Seattle" is the greatest (or one of the greatest) CD's ever. I'd like to challenge him on that. I'd like for him to listen to the soundtrack for the "Firefly" series. The music was composed by Greg Edmonson. It might take listening to two or three times before it sinks in. It did for me. Now, I can listen for hours on end. The music will haunt you, take you to highs, to lows, to sheer joy (especially the music to which River dances a ballet in combat boots), to utmost terror (Reavers are coming, Reavers are coming).

Funny you should bring up Joss Whedon--we are working on getting an interview with his executive producer, Tim Minear, for a podcast soon.
From the content of the podcast it is apparent that Kurzweil's Manhattan project has nothing but the name in common with Frist's. Dishonest, Dr. Yes. Frist talks about logistics and liability coverage, Kurzweil talks about RNAi research.
I wish you could have asked Frist how this country is preparing for bioterrorism and biowarfare by suppressing biotech research in this country and listening to the gormless pronouncements of the "bioethics" council.
