Please Help Support me for the American Heart Foundation Heart Walk

Ok, one last plea to ask for donations for the heart walk I am going on this Saturday, November 5th. Although I am just going to do (attempt) the one mile walk, the main purpose of the walk, of course, is to raise money for heart research and education. Heart disease is an equal opportunity killer of men and women and as we have seen with breast cancer, funds do seem to equal success in finding treatments. My donation page is here. If you would like to donate even one dollar, click on the paypal button and give that way--I will see that all funds get to the American Heart Association. Thanks to everyone who has given so far!

Doc - was going to ask this question to your husband in an email, but thought I'd get better response here:

1) Can I assume this is tax deductible and that I can use you donation page as a receipt?

2) For future reference, the term "awareness" really bothers me, and others like me. Your particular cause may need "awareness", but AIDS and Breast Cancer are STILL doing "awareness" campaigns which seems only to line the pockets of the people that create or assist in these events.

An email from you, or a comment here would help me in helping you... thanks.

Hi JFH,

Thanks for the comment--yes, the donations are deductible as they are a charity. I donated and was sent a receipt by email from the American Heart Association stating my contribution and amount. I understand your concern about where the money goes. Before getting involved with this walk through my cardiac rehab class here in Knoxville, I spoke to the people involved and was told that the 93% of funding does go only to education and research of heart disease and the other 7% is for administration, I suppose.

You can check out the American Heart association if you google the organization and see that they sponsor these Heart Walks across the country. Please do not feel obligated to donate--I understand being concerned about charities but from the research I have done--I think this is a good one.

'kay, you win only 'cus I believe that education IS needed around heart disease, especially when it comes to women that are overly frightened about breast cancer. Cathy Siepp's column strikes a cord in me as my mother died of stomach cancer at 55... Sending 20 bucks your way.

um, sorry, Helen, do you realize that the site you point to isn't https?... The form you reference asks WAY too much information on an unsecure internet address for me. I'll send ya 25 bucks via another method, but the organizers need to consult with Glenn, at a minimum, when it comes to internet security

Https/Deductable or not, I am in.

I did place the pledge "In Support" of Dr. Helen Reynolds when I knew it should be Dr. Helen Smith.

My bad. I typed and clicked too fast.

Hey anonym:

Thanks so much for the donation!--I really don't care what you call me--Reynolds, Smith, it makes little difference. The main thing to me is working to get the word out about heart problems as so many will encounter this illness. I don't want anyone--man, woman or child to go through what I did at the hospital during my heart attack when the staff was so clueless as to what was wrong with me. One of my friends (a lawyer of course) said I should have sued the hospital that turned me away when I had a heart attack--but I did much worse. I made the head of the emergency room give a talk on women's heart health to the doctors in the OR. I can only imagine the glazed over eyes and desperation these docs must have felt. Maybe next time a woman--or man--come into the ER, they will take it seriously. Thanks again for the generosity.

I forgot Blogger doesn't allow trackbacks -- I posted a kind of different post at my own blog
http://desertlightjournal.blog-city.com/awareness_is_one_thing__but_caring_is_something_else.htm

I do need to thank you, dear lady. I went to hospital today rather than going home and waiting for the pain to pass. I was too scared NOT to do something!

P.S. Please ask your husband to get you a better blog platform. He wouldn't expect you to live in a trailer park, now, would he?
