Podcast on Blog Advertising and More

Today, we talk with David Verklin, author (along with Bernice Kanner) of a new book, Watch This, Listen Up, Click Here: Inside the 300 Billion Dollar Business Behind the Media You Constantly Consume. Verklin is CEO of Carat Americas, the world's largest independent media buying operation, and he talks about what's going on with the ad business and how it's likely to impact new media, especially the web, blogs and mobile hand-held devices.

You can listen directly -- no downloads needed -- by going here and clicking on the gray Flash player. You can download the file by clicking right there, and you can get a lo-fi version, suitable for dialup, etc., by going here and selecting "lo fi." And of course, you can get a free subscription via iTunes -- and why wouldn't you, really?

This podcast is brought to you by Volvo Motors USA. Music is "Nobody's Full," by the Opposable Thumbs.

  1. OK, I'm annoyed. There's no way on your podcast to figure out where you are in time. I'm listening to the Verklin interview, and I pause a couple of times because the interview's long and I've got stuff to do.

I lasted 'till just past the peg purgo stroller section, and like a damned fool, I clicked on the link to the book.

Listen to podcast, maybe go buy book, go back to podcast. Now, ya think I might be able to go back to where I left the podcast? Nope, not a chance.

Folks, there's NO CHANCE I'll go back to that podcast, from the beginning. And I'm so annoyed that I'm not buying the book. I'll make myself popular with my advertising exec friends by going out for drinks, and letting them talk shop, and I'll ask questions. In a few weeks or so, I'll go to amazon, and buy the book used for under 5 bucks.

BTW, you were mentioning nobody comlaining about the volvo car ad. When the law prof starts the ad, I just turn off the speakers for 30 seconds, then go back to podcast. I never hear the ad. Kinda like ignoring ads on webpages. I've trained myself to do that.

  2. If I understand what James Griffin is saying, it's purely a function of those flash players not being very good - more suitable for a 2 minute video clip than a 30 minute audio file.

The only strategy I can think of to deal with that is to list that last instead of first.

re: short ads in podcasts - I don't think anybody minds as long as they're pretty short. And if they get long, well, there's always fast forward.

  3. James Griffin,

Thanks for the feedback. I will pass the information along but you can click on the link to the book and open it in a different window and look at the book as you listen to the podcast.

  4. Today I spent some time discussing the future of small town newspapers with a friend who works at one. We covered much of the information offered in this podcast. It was then interesting coming home and hearing it straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak. Thanks for the podcast.

  5. Helen, you sound great. Even better than usual.

James, try downloading the podcast and playing it in Windows Media Player, Quicktime, or whatever you use. You don't have to listen through that flash player.
