John Hawkins at Right Wing News did a mini interview with me on the topic of violent kids. You can read it here.

  1. Dr. Helen, I enjoyed this article very much and am interested in getting your book. I'll see if I can get it through Amazon unless it can be ordered from you directly.

  2. Viola,

You can get it free if you don't mind downloading it at www.violentkids.com--it is still available at Amazon.com on the used market.

  3. Dr. Helen: I very much like your idea that there is no single cause for violent kids. I see too much of this "it's this ..." thinking in society. It worries me. There are almost always multiple causes for social ills and thus we do no person any good by thinking of solving a single cause.

  4. I noticed you mentioned in the interview that you are not impressed with time outs as the chief form of discipline. What forms of discipline do you recommend? What do you think about spanking?

  5. ventanar7,

I think the punishment needs to fit the misdeed. For example, if a child breaks something on purpose, a time out does not teach them much whereas having to work and replace the item teaches that there are specific consequences for their actions.

Spanking is a debatable topic. One of the problems in this country is that people cannot tell the difference between real discipline and abuse and treat all spanking as abuse when it is not. Some studies on mild spanking--in a controlled way, have been found useful with younger kids--but not under 2. Hitting in an inconsistent and severe manner is not typically constructive. If you would like to know more, look at the work of UC Berkeley Professor Diana Baumrind.
