"The men eager to self-detonate on infidel airliners are not goatherds from the caves of Waziristan but educated middle-class Muslims"

Great point by Mark Steyn:

So once again we see the foolishness of complaceniks who drone the fatuous cliches about how "in this struggle, scholarships will be far more important than smart bombs". The men eager to self-detonate on infidel airliners are not goatherds from the caves of Waziristan but educated middle-class Muslims who have had the most exposure to the western world and could be pulling down six-figure salaries almost anywhere on the planet. And don't look to "assimilation" to work its magic, either. We're witnessing a process of generational de-assimilation: In this family, yet again, the dad is an entirely assimilated member of the transnational elite. His son wants a global caliphate run on Wahhabist lines.

P.S. Up until the time we decided to start this trip down 'Suicide Lane' with the popular election of Senators.....we were a well-balanced Representative Republic.

Since then, thinks have gone SERIOUSLY down hill. Especially with regards to Reynolds v. Simms (SCOTUS 1964).....

These young men who join or wish to join terrorist organizations where they will feel included aren't much different than urban young men who join organized street gangs for the same reason. For several decades now our global society has done nothing to break up the street gangs and change our perception of young men. Please don't expect any changes to the terrorist organization recruitment methodology. As long as some young men feel isolated and disliked they will be attempting to find approval with those that are willing to take them in.

Plus the authorities can't seem to understand that these guys don't have to be a member of an active "cell" to be dangerous. Authorities seem to think that all terrorists have weekly meetings of 7-8 people in which they discuss evil plans.

What we're seeing lately is loners using email and the Internet to get information and support for their actions.

I wouldn't call Mr. Abdulmutallab a sociopath. From this msnbc article, we find out that just a few years ago he was a friendly well adjusted high school student who liked basketball.

"But Efemena Mokedi remembered Abdulmutallab from their days on the basketball team at the exclusive school as "a smart kid" and "a friendly person."

"He was a very religious person, a very honest person. He was friends with all the teachers," said Mokedi, who now lives in the United States, in an interview broadcast on the BBC. "Yes, I'm very surprised. ... This is really out of how he is as a person. This is unexpected ... He's a very good guy, a very good chap."

Something happens to some young men between their teens and their early 20s to cause them to become isolated and violent. Also, some members of society get something from focusing hatred toward young men.

Don't delude yourselves, nothing will change. Our twisted society likes things just they way they are. Otherwise we'd do something about it.

Probably doesn't think of him as a psychopath either.

The comment (to Cham) suggesting jihadist (nutters) are the same as Democrats is about as stupid a comment as I have seen in a long time. Check out your tea party
crazies and the signs they carry!

To suggest that the majority in this nation voting for a Democrat in office are jihadists is at best an indication of some sort of pathology.

RE: fred's 'Impression'

Oddly enough, the blogfather just provided evidence supporting my allegations of gross malfeasance on the part of Democrats-in-office that fred takes so much umbrage at.

Does fred think it unconscionable to say that Democrats are as great a threat to the country as jihadis? How very odd. The truth of the matter is that they've done more damage to the country in one year of running rampant in the legislature than all of Al Qaeda and the Taliban together have done in the last eight years.

And the fools that elected them to such power bear the blame.

Steyn gives one example to support his generalization. But there are billions of people in the world. A few of them are going to be psychopathic, unhinged, what have you, regardless of how privileged and educated they are.

The more interesting question is, are most Muslim terrorists educated and middle class? Or are Mutallab and Osama bin Laden the exceptions?

I don't know the answer to this question. I'd like to see data instead of anecdotes and hand-waving.

As I said earlier....

....pay attention.

Additionlly, learn to think and reason. I know it's tough. Especially if you graduated from the vaunted American public education system after 1980. But there it is.

Good luck....

I pointed out that anecdotes are not equivalent to data. Not sure how that indicates that I don't know how to think and reason.

I'm happy to consider evidence that challenges my point of view. If anyone else feels like pointing me to a resource that you feel is worth paying attention to, great. Telling me I don't know how to think, however, is unlikely to convince me of whatever it is you want me to believe. ;)

All you've demonstrated in this thread is that you want someone to tell you WHAT to think. This is, in my honestly held opinion, an indication that you graduated from the vaunted American public education system either after 1980 or you were already brainwashed before then.

I can't tell you where to find information. No one in their right mind can. All we—those in our 'right' mind—can do is tell you you need to learn to think for yourself.

Too bad all the recent indications are that you can't.

You misunderstand what this is about. It is a war of ideology. They don't murder because they are feel like social misfits.

They murder because they adhere to a radical belief that it is their obligation to wage jihad so that Islam will become dominant.

Let's face it, political correctness is going to get a lot of people killed again someday. It is time to profile, with prejudice. If it walks like a duck, and talks like a duck, and has the name of a duck, pull it aside and check it out fully. Granny Jones and little Billy Johnson are not going to bomb a freaking airliner. The overwhelming majority of Americans - enough to consider "all" as far as being airline passengers, are not suicidal maniacs. And as we have seen since flight 98, the passengers are willing to do what is necessary, even if the $7.00 per hour TSA folks are not competent enough to sniff them out in the first place.

Were I on that flight, and close enough to him, I doubt this latest bomber would even be alive. And I know I am not the only one who thinks that way.

It seems that the most fanatical political/religious "radicals" are often sons of well-to-do families. Lenin, Che and many, many others fit this pattern.

"The more interesting question is, are most Muslim terrorists educated and middle class? Or are Mutallab and Osama bin Laden the exceptions?"

Osama's background is wayyy above middle class. While a Waziristani goatherd may feel a fanatical devotion to Islam, he is far too preoccupied with the problems of day to day survival , to become a fanatical leader.

Only a person with resources can afford the time and money it takes to develop, spread and finance a fanatical movement.

True. The similarity was that both believed suicide bombing their enemies was a good idea. And though Mutallab didn't have bin Laden's resources, neither was he a disenfranchised goatherd.
